Putting The Luxe Into Linear Kitchen Design

While the trend in kitchen design is undoubtedly linear, seamless and stylishly understated, the new crop of kitchen appliances for 2010 show colour and form are integral to the look.

Smeg, the forerunner in this sleek, almost futuristic concept for the kitchen, has just made another addition to its beautiful, multi-faceted Linear concept introduced late last year. The PVS750, the seventeenth appliance in the Linear range, is a five gas burner hob in a lush silver glass and satin stainless steel with elegant stainless steel and matte cast iron trivets tipped in red that seemingly float above the surface of the hob.

A centrally placed control panel, to the fore of the hob, features tactile polycarbonate knobs that are backlit when in use.

The 74cm wide appliance offers ample room for the serious cook with one ultra-rapid (wok) burner, one rapid, one semi-rapid and two auxiliary burners, all with super flame failure device that cuts the gas supply within four seconds should the flame be extinguished prematurely.

A stand-out feature of the appliance is the energy conserving, vertical direction of the flames. Unlike most other cooktops, the flame of the PVS750 is vertical, hitting the undersurface of the pan without escaping up the sides of the cooking vessel. Another plus is the appliance’s low 75mm profile, enabling an oven, drawers or even a dishwasher to be installed underbench.

Maintenance of the PVS750 is kept to a minimum with the seamless stainless steel and silver glass surface being easy to wipe over and finger-print proof. The control knobs are removable for easy cleaning while the trivets, burner assemblies and wok stand can all be easily washed in warm, soapy water.

The Linear PVS750 cooktop is part of the new Smeg Linear concept and partners a range of multifunction ovens, compact microwave, steam and convection ovens, a warming drawer and coffee machine. This model comes complete with Canali-design control knobs should the consumer wish to install it as part of the Smeg Classic stainless steel kitchen appliance concept.

Available nationally from specialist appliance retailers, electrical outlets and some department stores, the Smeg PVS750 retails for about $2890 and carries a two year in home warranty on parts and labour.
